Much Ado About Nothing
First performed at the end of the 16th century, this comic masterpiece represents the playwright at full maturity, mixing the most effortless of witty prose with poetry that compares to some of his greatest tragedies. It soars from high comedy to base humour by way of heart rending tragedy with a fleetness of foot that is the hallmark of our greatest playwright. One of the pleasures of working with the repertoire of this extraordinary writer is that the process of rehearsal only increases your admiration for the play, and certainly throughout the last few weeks I have been constantly struck by its profundity, its cleverness, the beauty of its structure and language, and most surprisingly its crudeness!
