A Yorkshire Tragedy
(The Tour)
The tragic true story of Walter Calverley was 400 years old last year, and it has lost none of its potency. A young man, trapped in a loveless marriage attacks his wife and children, killing two of them with his wife barely surviving (saved by a whalebone corset or so the story goes). It is quickly the talk of London, with a lurid pamphlet published soon after, which in turn inspires two plays, ‘A Yorkshire Tragedy’ and George Wilkins’ ‘The Miseries of Enforced Marriage’. In later years poems, legends, ghost stories, children’s nursery rhymes and conspiracy theories were to follow, as Walter’s reputation grows from a tormented, deeply troubled man who committed a horrific deed to a monster, incapable of anything but bloody murder.
